RYA Powerboat and Safety Boat

The Club runs RYA Powerboat L1& L2, plus RYA Safety boat courses on an annual basis. Min duration: 2 days

PBL2 with experience is a pre-requisite to undertaking a RYA Safety Boat course.

Both Courses are 2 days, plus an evening introduction (1830 - 2130 or 1900 to 2200) and the sessions usually start 0900 to 1700 each day.

  • Past Dates for 2023 for an Adult & separate Junior U18 Courses shown below
  • Induction session at CAYC Clubhouse or Carrickfergus Marina Building
  • Weekend/ 2 day on the water and theory sessions are held at Carrickfergus Marina and open water in that locale.

Course Schedule Pre-requisite: Evening or 3 hrs preparation of theory and learning - 17 March 6:30-9:30 at CAYC Club house
18 & 19 March 2023 for Adults only.

Course Schedule: Pre-requisite Evening or 3 hrs preparation of theory and learning - 7th or 9th April
8 & 9 April or 10 & 11 April for an Under18 group. Scheduled during Easter Holidays and a dependency on availability of Instructors/students

An online booking with Joining instructions is required from those registered. All pre-requisites are on the Booking / Joining information.

PBL2 requires a passport size photo. Application online with DOB and payment must be completed prior to the course.

Non-Members (temporary membership is included in this cost for the duration of the course).

Student/U25 Membership or Full, Family Membership Fees are very favourable at the Club: see Link to Membership.


To encourage use of the training and volunteers in the Club there is a Safety Boat Voucher scheme.

Adult Members who have completed the course will receive a refund of £30 - if 4 support activities on a Club RIB are delivered.

U18 who pay £140 fee will receive a Safety Boat Voucher for 2 support activities on Club RIB Rota, equates to a refund of £10

We are committed to increasing the number of members RYA certified to assist in manning our safety boats in support of racing, events and training activities.

Power boat Instructors at CAYC : Richard Robinson, Colin de Fleury, Rory McKenna, John Lewis, Simon Exley, Heather Foster-Sharpe, Sheela Lewis & Kate Delaney.

Powerboat L1 & L2 courses & Safety Boat will be run based upon registered interest.
