RYA Awards 2020

Published 17:08 on 18 Oct 2020

Each year the RYA Volunteer Awards recognise the outstanding contributions made by volunteers throughout the UK.

Traditionally taking place at an awards ceremony in London, the RYA Volunteer Awards recognise and say 'thank you' to volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution to the sport with recipients nominated by their sailing clubs, class associations and members of the boating community.

This year some 44 volunteers are being celebrated across the UK for their exceptional dedication in boating, and we are delighted that County Antrim Yacht Club's Colin de Fleury has been awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award.

"Colin has been a member and willing volunteer at County Antrim Yacht Club since 2007. A highly experienced Powerboat, Keelboat and Senior Dinghy Instructor and Race Coach, he enthusiastically fulfils duties as Race Officer and safety boat helm or crew, as well as maintaining training dinghies and mentoring Assistant Instructors. He also supports race coaching and delivers Powerboat Level 2 courses at Belfast Lough Sailability.

He offers help whenever he can, turning up for working parties and supporting fundraisers, throwing himself into the club's 'Try Sailing' events and acting as official Beach Master at events. The first to welcome those arriving, he is very organised and thorough, always prioritising safety and he uses his logistical ability to organise teams to launch and retrieve. Colin enjoys sharing his passion of sailing with others.

He has always demonstrated determination, leadership and great patience in his roles and has enabled all - from diverse backgrounds, young, old and those with disabilities - to achieve their goals. He has energy, enthusiasm and commitment, and inspires others with his selfless service and support."
This year due to the ongoing pandemic, some winners will be presented with their awards at small presentations held at their sailing venues whilst others receive them from the safety of their homes.

We hope to welcome Colin and his family to CAYC for a small ceremony with the General Committee when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we wish to send our congratulations to Colin! It is fantastic that your hard work and commitment to sailing has been recognised by the RYA.
